Dream It, Do It: A Fresh Take on Goal Setting
Let’s be honest: goal setting can sound kind of... meh. Like something you do because a teacher told you to or something that only super organized people with color-coded planners get excited about. But setting goals doesn’t have to be boring. Setting goals can be a way to get clear on what you want, make moves toward it, and build confidence as you see your plans come to life.
Whether you want to write a book, get better at public speaking, learn how to code, or feel secue in your own skin—setting goals helps you turn ideas into action. And when you do it in a way that works for YOU, it can actually be kind of exciting.
Step 1: Get Real About What You Want
Ask yourself these questions: What do I care about right now? What am I curious about? What’s something I want to know more about?
This is where your goals start. Not with what looks good on paper, but with what lights something up in you.
Try this: Set a 5-minute timer and write without editing yourself. Ask:
What’s something I want to feel proud of this year?
What kind of person do I want to be growing into?
Step 2: Choose One Focus
You don’t need a whole list to start. One goal is enough. Think of it like planting a seed—you focus your energy, and it grows.
Make your goal clear. Not "get better at school," but "finish all my homework on time for the next two weeks."
Ask Yourself: If I could make progress on just one thing this month, what would it be?
Step 3: Make It Feel Like You
Your goal doesn’t have to look like anyone else's. Some people love bullet journals. Some need reminders in their phone. Others might doodle their goals on sticky notes.
You get to design how you track it, plan for it, and stay motivated.
Step 4: Break It Into Pieces
Big goals are great, but they grow step by step. Ask: What’s one thing I can do this week to move closer to this goal?
Keep it small and doable. Each action builds momentum.
Here’s and Example - If your goal is to feel more confident in class:
This week: Raise my hand once.
Next week: Ask one question after class.
The week after: Share an idea in a group project.
Remember, little actions = big change.
Step 5: Stay Flexible
Not every week will go as planned. You might lose motivation, hit roadblocks, or feel like you're starting over.
That doesn't mean you're off track. It means you're learning. Your goal can shift as you do.
Step 6: Celebrate As You Go
Waiting until the finish line to feel proud? Nope. Every small step counts. Did you show up? Did you try something new? That matters.
Why Goals Matter
When you set your own goals, you’re taking ownership of your life. You’re choosing what matters to you and learning how to go after it. That builds trust in yourself. That builds confidence.
And when you do it alongside other girls who are on their own journeys? That’s powerful.
At the Girl Lab, we don’t just talk about dreams. We help you build them. Goal setting here isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about becoming the kind of girl who believes in her own potential and takes action to shape her future.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. But you can take one powerful step today.
Love always,
The Girl Lab Team
